The first time i went to ALDI i got caught out by their no shopping bag or cashier packing policy. Fine, so i brought my own bags and watched others get caught out.

after recently shopping at ALDI in Prahran, a cashier asked a store manager to do a price check and he said he was too busy. the two cashiers just looked at each other and made some comments.

After coming home just before xmas with my newborn, I decided to go to the new ADLI in Chadstone shopping centre. I shopped and heard commotion from the cashier section but shopped frantically in a rush to get back home and ignored it.

When I finished putting my stuff on the checkout conveyor belt, i heard the adjacent cashier speaking abruptly to an elderly customer. The assistant manager came over and acted rudely as well. not only his language but by using a stop gesture. I heard the lady reply that she was just trying to help and the cashier shouted she had it under control.

then my cashier told me to stand at the end of the check-out and pack. i did as instructed and i started to quickly pack things into my bag. there's not much space at the end of an ALDI check-out and all the cashier has to do is scan the items which have barcodes you can't miss. Suddenly he stops scanning and says i have to get a trolley because i have too many things and it'll take too long to wait for me to pack. i said i'll just pack quickly but he insisted i get trolley or he'll refuse service. i told him it didntmake sense and he refused service and got the nearby assistant manager to come over. he told the cashier to go ahead and scan. I asked him why would i get refused service or have to get a trolley and he said i had to leave. i said why? what for? i was very confused. he threatened me with security and i asnwered "get them - i haven't done anything wrong. i just want my things"

he got security and i stood ground. other customers came to my help but i got escorted out of the shopping centre.

I called ALDI HQ and got put through to the area manager. he wasn't re-assuring. he said he'll have a meeting but wouldnt be able to do anything as he would be in another ALDI the next day and then away for xmas break. I asked him to get the video surveillance tape. he called back a week later to report he watched the tape and agreed with his staff. I doubt he saw the tape as there is no way the footage would agree with him.

The other customers who tried to help me have said they will not go back to ALDI. I certainly won't. I wonder how many people suffer from their poor customer service. The stores are managed by a few kids who think they can do whatever they want.

I can't think of an easier job than being an ALDI cashier. I can't believe the total lack of management and customer service at ALDI. I won't just not go there anymore. As far as i am concerned this is grounds for a lawsuit.

Wow, I have to say it sounds as if you've really hit some rotten eggs.

From my point of view at my local Aldi (Croydon), I find the staff to be friendly and quite lovely to deal with. Admittedly I haven't had any need to really call on them for assistance, so I can't say how well they provide that, but I've listened to interactions with others in the lanes as I go through and everyone seems happy and gets along.

I know the Aldi lanes can be intimidating the first time around, and I would ALWAYS suggest having a trolley (unless you're but buying a handful of items), as the whole idea is to get people through quickly and then you take your time packing your bags on the provided benches after the queues.

For the staff at the store you were at to let things escalate as they did is just HORRENDOUS customer service. I understand they want people to get through quickly, but really they can just say 'next time if you have that much, it'd be easier if you had a trolley', and leave it at that, and allow you to pack your bags, sure would have been less disruptive.

A store really is only as good as its employees, so it sounds like they need better training and, oh I dunno, some empathy.

I too would like to hear if anyone else has had issues such as these.

thanks, i also remember hearing that you are the managing director of Aldi. I will be taking this further.
what isn't to be sour about when:

- you do nothing more than shop and pack frantically to get home to your newborn
- get refused service by the cashier for not having a trolley.
- the assistant manager just asks you to leave and then gets security immediately after you ask to speak to another manger.
- security escort you out of a store and, because other customers come over and protest against the staff, you get escorted out of the shopping centre like a criminal
- you complain to aldi hq whose area manager tries to avoid the issue and then calls back and lies he watched the security tape and agrees with his staff

There is no sign to ask people to use a trolley (which is my perorgative not to use), and i dont see whats so time consuming or terrible about waiting the three seconds it takes to let me catch up and place my items in my own bag. Are ALDI cashiers that lazy? And how ridiculous and time-consuming is the request to immediately get a trolley or not get served???

As far as i am concerned there is something fundamentally wrong and criminal with the management at ALDI and i will show you in a law of court. Unfortunatley for you - i am not a criminal but an extremely law abiding civilian. And I am sour - who wouldn't be! especially knowing that its happened to other good people and will continue unless someone decent comes along and insists on a change in management and policy.

I wish you luck in your discussions with Aldi, but I am in no way affiliated with them at all. I just like shopping there and wanted somewhere to discuss the weekly special items seeing as it's hard to come by information about them online.
